Chuisky tract is a transport tree of Siberia.

Altai is the center of Asia, which occupies vast areas of the largest Eurasian continent on the planet. In the centuries-old process of collecting Eurasian lands and peoples by Russia, he became part of it in the middle of the XNUMXth century.

The main artery connecting and connecting Gorny Altai and Russia is the Chuisky tract, which penetrates its territory like a trunk of a transport tree, from which an extensive network of large and small roads departs in different directions. Through the channels of that tree, currents of the material, spiritual, intellectual constantly flow, interconnecting this territory into a single living whole, and the whole of Russia with Mongolia and China. Considering the role it plays for the country as a whole, on May 26, 1922, by the resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, the Chuysky tract was given the status of a road of state importance. In May 2022, this major historical event will be exactly 100 years old.

The historical roots of the Chuisky tract are closely related to the penetration of the Great Silk Road into Altai, which became an example of economic and cultural cooperation between peoples and states with different ethnic, religious and political traditions. Carrying across the world from the shores of the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean world religions, scripts and culture for one and a half thousand years, the Great Silk Road mutually enriched the peoples of Europe and Asia. Trade caravans from China at the borders of the Great Wall diverged in the north and south directions. The "Northern Road" through Turfan and Kashtar passed along the southern borders of the greater Altai, through the "Dzhungar Gates", connecting the Great Belt of the Eurasian steppes with Central Asia, heading to the Fergana Valley and further to the lower reaches of the Volga and the Northern Black Sea coast.

There was an ancient caravan trail leading to the Altai mountain range. The most ancient pastoralists, farmers and metallurgists lived here. They left behind the monuments of the Afanasiev culture of the late XNUMXth - early XNUMXnd millennium BC, the mysterious stone crypts of Karakol of the XNUMXnd millennium BC, the walls of which are painted with figures of mythological characters and the mysterious Kereksurs with deer stones from the late Bronze Age. In the Altai mountains, stone mounds of the Pazyryk tribes of the XNUMXth-XNUMXnd centuries have been preserved. BC. - the contemporaries of the legendary Scythians of the Black Sea region, the Persians of the Achaemenid state of Asia Minor, the Sakas of Central Asia and the Chinese in the southeast.

The growth of the Russian state by Siberia at the beginning of the 1604th century, the formation of the Tomsk fort in XNUMX became a new stage in the development of the southern borders of Western Siberia.

At the beginning of the 1709th century, the economic development of the Verkhobsk basin began, in XNUMX the Russian Bikatun fortress (the city of Biysk) was founded at the source of the Ob River. The Decree signed by the Great Sovereign Peter Alekseevich on the construction of the Bikatun Fortress had far-reaching consequences. The new fortress was supposed to take over the functions of economic, political and trade relations. The Biysk fortified line formed on the southern borders covered the territory from Ust-Kamenogorsk to Kuznetsk. Since the XNUMXth century, trade has revived. Russian merchants began to actively develop trade relations in the newly developed Siberian lands. Contacts with the local population made economic exchange possible.

From the second half of the XNUMXth century, a topographic survey of the Biysk District was carried out in places adjacent to the Chinese border. The authorities were interested in the new trading place in order to study the possibilities of arranging the border. Trading shops and warehouses were not only in Kosh-Agach, but also in Mongolia in Kobdo and Ulyasutai. Trade along the Chuisky tract was in full swing and it involved in the trade process not only Biysk, but also Siberian merchants, entrepreneurs from different regions of Russia.

In 1900, the Ministry of the Interior applied to His Majesty's Cabinet with a petition for an allowance for correcting the pack path, which was soon allocated. In the "Survey of Tomsk Province for 1900" it was reported that "The laying of a wheel track from Ongudai to Kosh-Agach has begun." As a result of the work carried out on the construction of bridges, pipes, retaining walls, and the construction of ferry crossings in 1903, the route from Biysk to Kosh-Agach was opened for wheeled traffic in two-wheeled coaches. A new stage in the development of trade relations along the Chuisky tract began.

In 1911, the Chuisky tract passed into the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Railways, and research is carried out from the funds allocated for the exploration work of the Siberian Railway. The Chuisky tract becomes a transport route for goods from Mongolia to the west of Russia. In 1913, survey work was carried out - a survey of the existing road from Biysk to Kosh-Agach, more than 500 miles long. Vyacheslav Yakovlevich Shishkov was entrusted with the leadership of the expeditionary parties of the Tomsk Railway District. It was he who headed the survey work on the tracing of the Chuisky tract in 1913. The Ministry of Railways noted the primary importance of large-scale exploration work, since "... the current state of the Chuisky tract does not correspond to its outstanding economic and state significance."

The research had to be interrupted due to the First World War and the expedition returned to Tomsk, where the processing of the collected material was continued. Having moved to St. Petersburg, V.Ya. Shishkov by the end of 1916, completed the processing of materials, schemes for the sites and determined the required scope of work. Based on the processing of the collected material, it was proposed to build a tract along the Katun River. V.Ya.Shishkov's research on the Chuisky tract in 1913-1914 completed his 20-year period of Siberian exploration, and in 1929-1930. construction was started along the entire length of the right-bank direction of the tract on the basis of his project.

On June 5, 1933 by the Government Decree on the People's Commissariat of Foreign Trade of the USSR No. 333, “... Chuisky tract is considered militarized with the introduction of the Charter on service and labor discipline of militarized workers and employees. This Resolution is caused by the particularly important importance of the Chuysky tract in the general system of the national economy ... to ensure uninterrupted work in the implementation of the important tasks assigned to the tract for export-import transportation. The workers of the tract are equated with the glorious soldiers of the Red Army in the conditions of the peaceful construction of socialism. “The Chuisky tract, as one of the important foreign trade routes of the Soviet Union and the main road artery of Altai, having the main section of the city of Biysk, as the starting point of the railway and water transport, reaches the border of northwestern Mongolia. The total length of the tract is 622 km, of which up to 500 km pass in the terrain of the high mountain ranges of the northern Altai, crossing the Seminsky and Chike-Tamansky passes. The construction of the Chuisky tract was actually carried out during two seasons of 1933-1934. "

Since 1961, the Chuisky tract has been an integral part of the Novosibirsk - Biysk - Tashanta highway, 963 km long, linking the scientific and industrial potential of the Novosibirsk region, the agro-industrial granary of the Altai Territory and the recreational and tourist cluster of the Altai Republic with a single transport corridor. Also, the Chuysky tract (federal highway P-256) is an integral link of the international highway H-4, going to Mongolia and China. In international significance, as an important element of integration ties, the Chuisky tract is included in the program "Our Common Home - Altai", adopted at the interstate level by Russia, Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan. Chuisky tract is the only road in the world that has its own museum in Biysk, Altai Territory - the road has a centuries-old history and was included in the rating of the most beautiful roads in the world, compiled by the international scientific publication National Geographic.

Experts of the Association of Automotive Tourism inspected the auto routes in the Altai Republic

From February 22 to February 25, 2020, the Nationwide Association of Automobile Tourism, headed by the President of the Association, Sergei Lobarev and the head of the "Development of OPI" project of the Association, Denis Manko, conducted a four-day expedition in the Altai Republic.

During the expedition, the delegation drove by cars along the Chuisky, Siberian tracts and the Silk Road. The roadside infrastructure was studied, the sites for cars, go-karting and motor sports were examined, which, according to experts, should be tied to the route "Altai - Golden Mountains" and "Chuysky tract" .. In this direction, it is planned to interact with the Federation of Motor Sports.

In addition, meetings were held with the head of the Altai Republic Oleg Horokhordin, masters of folk crafts of the republic, agreements on cooperation were signed and a regional representative office of the Association was opened in the Altai Republic.

“From the experience of visiting other regions, I saw the symbiosis and good interaction of the business community, authorities and public organizations,” said Sergei Lobarev following the expedition.

The members of the expedition were also able to get acquainted with the checkpoint on the border with Mongolia, meet with the leadership of the border service and customs in order to solve the problems associated with the passage of motorized tourists through the border zone, and to increase the flow of Russian citizens and foreign citizens. It would seem a small problem, but sometimes the passage of customs procedures leaves an imprint on the general impression of tourists from the hospitality of the country.

The experts of the Association decided to develop three routes, within the framework of which it is necessary to create and equip four camp sites and a multifunctional zone of roadside infrastructure near the airport of the city of Gorno-Altaysk. The Association's proposals will be presented to the regional leadership. 

Expeditions of the Association members along the Chuysky tract auto route

When experts drive the route themselves, they see strengths, weaknesses, and can assess the prospects for road routes. At the end of February 2020, experts from the National Association of Automotive Tourism and caravaners conducted a four-day expedition across the Altai Republic behind the wheel of a car, studied the roadside infrastructure, points of attraction on the Chuysky tract route.

This expedition was unique since the social activists had to travel along the Chuisky, Siberian tracts and the Silk Road.  The most emotional stories were recorded on the passes of the Chuisky tract at an altitude of 2 meters. We saw and felt the prospect of interaction on these routes with regional and village authorities, colleagues in ecotourism, gastronomic, children's and rural tourism.

There were inspected areas for parking cars and motorhomes, go-karting and motor sports. It was necessary for the experts to tie and integrate it with the Altai - Golden Mountains route. In this direction, the Association will seek cooperation with the Motor Sports Federation. This will give this route the opportunity to become truly the most visited and popular.

Experts of the Association of Autotourism held unforgettable meetings with the masters of folk crafts, the head of the Altai Republic, Oleg Horokhordin. The signing of cooperation agreements and the opening of a regional office of the National Association of Automotive Tourism in the Altai Republic took place.

An analysis was carried out on the experience of visiting other regions. Such a symbiosis and good interaction of the business community, government authorities and public organizations gives rise to the creation of truly top-class, back-to-back automobile routes.

Three routes were outlined, which now need to be described and proposed to the regional authorities, to create, equip four camp sites and one multifunctional roadside infrastructure zone near the airport of the capital of the Altai Republic, Gorno-Altaysk.

Arriving at the airport # Gorno-Altaysk 22.02 in the morning, we moved in two cars along #Chuiskytrakt (highway P-256) towards Ongudaysky district. The first stop was made behind Shebalino, near the memorial sign about the 200th anniversary of the entry of the Altai people into Russia, that is, we drove about 190 km

The road along its entire length (with the exception of one section for #Manzherok, where the bridge is being repaired and because of this there is a narrowing of the road) of excellent quality, there are sufficient numbers of gas stations of various companies, both large vertically integrated oil companies and local ones. Cellular coverage (not always with the Internet) is almost ubiquitous, but there are quite long sections of the route where communication is completely absent.

The sanitary stop, equipped with a warm bathroom, was the first to meet us just opposite the memorial sign; before that we met “traditional” toilets, that is, wooden houses with a pit under them. The tourists we interviewed, whom we met on the site near the stele, to the question of what is most lacking from the road infrastructure, answered: warm and clean toilets

Further at the crossroads #Chuiskytrakt and road 84K132, leading towards Ust-Kan and Ust-Koksa, we inspected the land plot, on which it will be possible to equip a camp site in the future

We were impressed by the talent of the craftsmen, their loyalty to traditions and the desire to pass on this unique knowledge and skills to the younger generation. We believe that this Center can become one of the main points of attraction for tourists, a place where it will be possible not only to visually inspect the results of the skills of local residents, but also to take part in their creation.

Saying goodbye to the hospitable masters, #Chuiskytrakt we got to the village #Aktash, in which we turned onto road 84K-1, which leads to #Ulagan, the end point of the first day's journey. We made a stop at the Krasnye Vorota pass, this picturesque section of the path passing through the rocks painted with reddish cinnabar. It is not for nothing that this place is included in the list of natural monuments. #Altai Republicthe views are simply breathtaking

It's a festive day, our company is for men, we had breakfast, congratulated each other on the holiday and set off

The head car we had was an off-road vehicle, easily overcame a snowdrift, but a passenger Toyota Camry got stuck and had to be pulled out by a tug. In general, climatic conditions impose great restrictions and increase the cost of building bathrooms, which should work even in the most severe frosts, while remaining warm and provided with water. The cost of building can reach 1,2 million rubles and the local district budget cannot afford such investments.

The landscape outside the window changed from forest to almost lunar, we drive up to the regional center # Kosh-Agach... As we were able to convince ourselves more than once during our trip, the severity of nature in Altai is always compensated by the sincerity and openness of the people living here. So at the Head of the Kosh-Agach region @ Kydyrbaev Serikzhan Muratkanovich we met a warm welcome, they were waiting for us, they prepared a lot of very useful and interesting information for our arrival

But first, after a short meeting, we head to the border crossing with Mongolia in the village #Tashanta... Excellent conditions have been created for the border crossing staff: excellent residential buildings for employees and their families have been built right next to the checkpoint. The crossing point itself is also equipped with modern equipment, according to the border crossing management, the time for passing one car is no more than 20 minutes. It is planned to build another terminal, which will double the transmission capacity. The limitation is the work schedule of the point from 2-8 to 00-18, which suggests the construction of a hotel complex with a camping near the point for #automobile tourists who did not have time to pass during the day.

We would have liked to have stayed in this fertile land longer, but the program of the trip dictated its requirements, especially since we had to travel more than 200 kilometers. For our experts, who often visited these places, it was a discovery that you no longer need to tempt fate while driving along a narrow road along the cliff, but you can comfortably drive through two newly built bridges and along the P373 road to your destination. We were once again impressed with how people, with love and respect for nature, create wonderful places for relaxation and immersion in the customs and life of the indigenous peoples of Altai. A variety of activities, the opportunity to take part in simple but no less exciting rural activities, accommodation either in comfortable rooms in separate houses or in a traditional village - all this attracts and will attract true connoisseurs of original and comfortable rest to @ Inegen. And how delicious they cook there! I still remember the borscht, which we were hospitably fed.

The event is held by the forces and means of its participants, public organizations, sponsors are allowed.
The costs of participating in the expedition are borne by the crew members and are determined by the following components:
road tolls, fuel;
- food, accommodation;
- Individual expenses depend on the specific terms and stages of participation in the expedition.
